Meet - Judy Blakeburn

I am a country girl who grew up on a farm in Toone, TN where I was taught to love and appreciate nature. In the late sixties I fell in love with pottery at Union University. I continued to pursue that love while working on an MFA at the University of MS. In 1972 1 began teaching public school art and continued that until retirement in 2012 with the exception of a twelve-year time spread as a commercial artist in jewelry design. This was due to a move to Fort Worth TX in 1981, and in this job, I began to focus on the small details and surface that make design so important.

I spend a great deal of my retirement time throwing pots in my basement in Toone TN.

Life is good because God is good!

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a decorative and functional artist. My journey into clay began in 1969. My first college pottery class hooked me into a life long passion. I love the challenge and forgiveness of clay and its endless possibilities. Being a tactile person, I use texture as an element of my designs. The love of nature is also incorporated into my creations and you can see that I love birds. The stoneware pieces are fired in an electric kiln to 2200 degrees. Depth of color is achieved by layering on glazes using a variety of techniques. All glazes are food safe.
